No Good Friday

One of Athol Fugard's township plays. For this production, directed by Samuel Ravengai, I designed the set. The director and I looked at fragmentation as an aesthetic theme. Set in the 1950s I drew from artworks by Sam Nhlengethwa, Gerard Sekoto and Jürgen Schadeberg to get a better feel for what Sophiatown looked like. The setting is in the back garden of a house in Sophiatown in which two shacks are situated. The two shacks and the suggestion of the back of the house have all be fragmented and broken up into shapes, including hanging windows and invisible walls.
